Mother & Child Jan ;38(2):68-71.

A study was conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Lahore, to estimate the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in patients suffering from chronic liver disease (CLD) and compare it with general population. 120 patients of CLD admitted in Medical Unit II, during 1999 were screened for HBsAg with Latex Agglutination Technique and results compared with data from Blood Bank, where all blood donors were screened for HBsAg. HBsAg was positive in 28.3% patient with CLD and 1.53% blood donors. Patients with CLD showed a significantly higher (P<0.001) prevalence of HBV as compared to general population, thus, indicating an association of HBV with CLD.
