Post-operative analgesic effect of spinal Bupivacain fantanyl in urological surgeries.
J Surg Jan ;27(1):52-5.

To observe the effect of adding intrathecal fentanyl to hyperbaric bupivacain (0.75%) in post-operative analgesic period. Design: Observational Study Place and Duration of Study: Department of Anesthesiology and critical care, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad from Sept. to Oct. 2003. Settings: This study was carried out on 31 patients who were selected on the basis of set criteria, came to urology operation theatre for some major and minor procedures. All of them were given spinal anesthesia by same technique and intrathecal fetanyl in addition to local anaesthetic agent was given to all in the same dose. Time of onset of motor and sensory blocks was noted. All patients were followed up in ward to see the changes in post-operative analgesic period. Results: After observing the results, it was seen that periods of motor and sensory block were prolonged to 5-7hrs (Mean=6hrs), and 6.5-9.0hrs (mean=4.8hrs) respectively, which were quite longer than those, mentioned for spinal hyperbaric bupivacain 0.75% (15mg) alone in literature. Conclusion: Addition of intrathecal fentanyl (25microgram) in 0. 75% hyperbaric bupivacain spinal anaesthesia can delay the demand of analgesic in immediate post-operative period and this period is longer than the period of motor block.
