Clinical manifestations of diabetic patients.

Objective: To study the different clinical manifestations of DM. Design of study: Descriptive and analytical study. Materials and Methods: Record of 3275 (male 1228, female 2047) diabetic patients registered during this period was evaluated for different clinical presentations and effect of age, sex and weight was noted by chisquare method. Results: 52.4% patients were asymptomatic. Common symptoms observed were classical symptoms in 47.6%, weight loss in 20.5%, weakness in 15.3%, paresthesias in 7.2%, constipation in 6%, infections in 5.7%, pruritus in 4.4%, abdominal pain in 3.3% and foot lesions in 1.8%. Weight loss and weakness, impotence and ketoacidosis were significantly more common in male and non-obese patients while paresthesias, constiption, pruritus, abdominal pain and miscellaneous complaints were more common in female and obese patients (p<0.05). Classical symptoms were more common in younger patients and all other were more common in older patients (p<0.01). Conclusion: More than 50% patients are asymptomatic hence necessitating the routine check-up for blood sugar in all persons >40 years age.
