Diagnostic Significance of Bone Marrow Examination: A Nine Years Experience.

Background: A number of diseases present with such symptoms that create diagnostic problems and bone marrow examination usually helps in diagnosis of such cases. Methods: This retrospective study presents analysis of 902 bone marrows examined in the Department of Pathology, Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad, Pakistan, during 1990-1998. Results: 92.7% of total cases revealed a definitive diagnosis, which was, not possible only on clinical examination. Only in 7.27% cases, the bone marrow aspiration was dry tap and majority of these dry taps were diagnosed by bone marrow trephine. Conclusion: Many a times, this simple procedure proves to be of tremendous help to the clinician and sometimes very unexpected cause may be revealed which is less expected on clinical examination.
