Arthroscopy of the hip joint: Indications, operative technique and clinical results.
J Surg Jan ;21-22:27-31.

Hip arthroscopic examination of 119 hips in 105 patients was performed during a period of 4 years. Of these 32 cases underwent arthroscopy surgery. A two-directional arthroscopy of the hip joint developed by Dr. Takatoshi Ide was used, which facilitates a global view of the joint. Some of the indications are joint debridment in osteoarthritis, removal of loose bodies, synovectomy in rheumatoid arthritis, release of adhesions between the joint capsule and the femoral head, partial resection of the limbus and biopsy in diseases like Rapidly Destructive Coxarthrosis (RDC). Short term follow-up was satisfactory and a reduction of pain was observed in all patients. Although the anatomical location of the hip joint is deep and joint space is narrow, we believe that using this procedure, hip arthroscopy is a suitable method in selected cases. CONCLUSION: Arthroscopic procedures were successfully carried out without significant complications. Short-term follow-up was satisfactory and a reduction of pain was observed in all the patients. With new improved instruments and two-directional technique, hip arthroscopy is rather easy to perform and less traumatic to the patient therefore we conclude that it is a suitable method in selected cases.
