J Med Sci Jan ;14(1):40-3.

Background: Pilonidal sinus is a surgical condition most commonly seen in the intergluteal region but occasionally also seen in inter digital spaces, umbilicus and rarely on neck and axilla. Various surgical procedures are available to treat this condition but we undertook a comparison of two surgical procedures namely open excision and open excision with primary simple closure. Research Methodology: 34 consecutive non-randomized cases presenting with pilonidal sinus were included in the study. 22 patients under went simple excision (Group A) while 12 patients under went simple excision with primary simple closure (Group B). Cases in both groups were closely monitored for length of hospital stay, recurrence of the problem, post operative bleeding and wound sepsis. Results: Mean hospital stay in group A was 3 days as compared to 6.5 days in group B. The incidence of post operative sepsis was insignificant in group A as compared to 41.6% in group B. Conclusion: The simple procedure of block extraction of sinuses and Packing of the resultant cavity with regular sitz baths showed better results than complicated procedures.
