Pattern of Hodgkin`s lymphoma in children.

Objective: To determine clinicopathologic characteristics of children suffering from Hodgkin`s lymphoma (HL). Design: Observational descriptive study. Setting: Oncology/hematology section of department of Pediatrics, Mayo Hospital Lahore affiliated with King Edward Medical University, Lahore. Duration: From December 1, 2002 to February 28, 2005. Subjects: All children under 15 years with histoiogicaiiy proven HL. Results: During the study period 44 children of histoiogicaiiy proven HL were admitted. Mean age was 7.34 years and male to female ratio was 10:1. 4.54% children had stage I, 25% stage II, 50% stage III and 20.45% stage IV. `B1 symptoms were present in 57% cases. Only 2 children had mediastinal lymphadenopathy and 21% had bone marrow infiltration. Mixed cellularity histological subtype was seen in 68% cases followed by lymphocyte predominant type. Conclusion: In our patients HL was seen more frequently in younger children who presented in advanced stage and mixed cellularity histological type was the most common type. These findings are consistent with the pattern observed in other developing countries with poor socioeconomic status.
