Hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolaemia as risk factors for stroke

Objective: To find out major modifiable risk factors in relation to sex and mortality and stroke for better intervention. Method: Two hundred consecutive patients with stroke in a local hospital were included. Patients having systolic BP more than 140 mmHg or diastolic BP more than 95 mmHg were considered hypertensive. These having pasting blood sugar more than 126 mg/dl and random more than 200 mg/dl were considered diabetic. Statistics Analysis: SPSS v 10.1 was used for analysis. Results: Out of 200, 189 patients could be studied, of which 97 were males and 92 females. Overall mean age was 60.8 ± 13 (20-99) years. Hypertension was found in 155 patients and was most prevalent risk factor (P<0.02). Significant relationship was found between systolic hypertension and intracerebral bleed (P<0.03). On the other hand diabetes mellitus was significantly associated with cerebral intracerebral bleed (p<0.013). Conclusion: Adequate control of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and hypercholesterolemia can mortality from stroke.
