1000 individuals between 11-40 years of age were screened for hypertension over a two year period in Rawalpindi Islamabad region. Overall, a 10.4% prevalence of hypertension was noted. This was lower (5.7%) in the younger age group of 11 to 20 years but rose to 15.8% in those aged 31 to 40 years. The male prevalence was higher (13.87%) compared to females (6.54%). A strong association was noted with smoking (23.03%), a family history of the disease (48.57%) and a significantly raised Body Mass Index (47.11%). The prevalence was higher in Urban (10.84%) compared to rural areas (8.79%). It is concluded that hypertension under 40 years of age is a significant problem, especially for males.
