If you are a landed immigrant in Canada, it makes sense to write the canadian exams. Exams have similarities to USMLE. For non-landed immigrants without fellowship certifications it is very tough to get into residency in Canada; I feel even more difficult than the USA. You can go to the website of Medical Council of Canada for more details about the examinations. Good luck.

Try international medical graduate website for info. about rsidency process in Ontario, Canada. For the 2 years now they have relaxed the rules in Ontario as compared to other Canadian provinces, so you don't have to be a landed immigrant or resident to apply. I think the website is www.oimgc.utoronto.ca
Good luck

the only exam which has a predictable outcome is USMLE.

The requirements for international medical graduates in Canada are definitely improving. It is my understanding that preference is still given to graduates who are board certified (FCPS in case of Pakistan) from their countries of origin. The new website for IMG is a new milestone and anyone interested should directly contact the administrators regarding their eligibility.

I will tell you the samething again if you want to do something .do USMLE , canada is more than 10 times smaller country (in terms of population as compared to US)and same goes with opportunities or even more so, and though thier visa system might be much open but there health system is not as welcoming as USA rather it is very closed and would restrict entry of foreign grads but no harm in trying your luck out there too but keep the USMLE option open.
best of luck

Hi there
Ijalazi, I have sent u an email from here about usmle and mcc... could u please help me a bit to understand the diff between the usmle and mcc exam is there any diff and what is it? is there a lot more material for usmle than mcc that u have to review? I have done my research on the residency part, i am more concerned with the exam it self....

first of all you have to understand the logistics of both these countries and systems:
1. Canada is a total Govt funded health care system means no private hospitals on the other hand in USA (states) both systems are operative.
2. Canadian system prefers canadian medical grads. in the first match and non canadian grads (people who have not done their medical school from canada regardless of nationality) can only apply in the second match on the left over seats only , on the other hand in States there is only one match and USA and non- USA candidates compete simultaneously.
3. Polulation of Canada is roughly 30 Million and states is about 300 million.
4. The exams are more or less same though in canadian exam you donot get percentiles to compete as compared with the american exams.
5. the system in USA has been explored by a number of grads in pakistan and lot of information exists there on the otherhand canadian system is much unexplored because of the lack of opportunities for IMGs (international med grads) in canada.
Therefore considering the Health care system, Population size and hence opportunities, the know how of exams (USMLE vs MCC ) and the opportunity to apply simultaneously with the USA grads makes the states a much more predicatable and safer system for Doctor.
Just for example if you want to apply in neurology in canada , u will have to pray that after the first match there are some seats that are left over at some good center by the canadian grads and only than you stand a chance and apply (the left over canadian grads will also apply in the second match as well )and the probability factor of that is quite low and if not than you will have to apply next year but again in second match so in canadian system if you are not a canadian grad you start with an disadvantage.
If i have to choose between USMLE and MCC i would definitely give more marks to USMLE.
I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you Ijazali for the long reply. The thing is that I have done quite a lot of research and I knew most of it... yes USA is the best option without any doubt, not only is it a lot easier to get the residency but once you settle down in USA you earn a lot better. Of course, I like Canada and the Canadian life style better than the American, I am more the social/government kind of a person. What I was concerned about... some people say that if you for example give the MCC exams, you might as well give the USMLE. Now the step one for USMLE and Step one for MCC (Evaluation Exam) look very different... or are they....??

yes they would be some what different , but obviously the knowledge base would be the same.
Problem is that one only studies for these exam to get 95+ marks so than you have to study very specifically since u need marks this exam certificate if doesnot lead you to a job is as good as a dirty napkin in the dust bin.
Choice is all your and the whole world is in front of you, Call your shots.

If you want a flavor of the MCC exams you can get to their website and take a self assessment exam for a small fee (I think $40). The website is as follows
https://www.mcc.ca/SelfAssessment/
Good luck.

I have purchased Kaplan usmle Lecture Notes from http://www.usmleworldwide.com and i am pretty much satisfied from their prices and service. On the top of all, after sale service is unprecedented. So if someone is looking to purchase used books for usmle exam preparation then I would suggest them to check this website.
