help! MS/MD vs FCPS

AOA everyone.
I graduated two years ago(MBBS)and now i intend to pursue post-graduation in surgery. I've also cleared my FCPS part1. With CPSP changing laws every two weeks and being hell bent on making life of every trainee a living nightmare i have started thniking about MS/MD (pakistan).will some one kindly comment on the pros and cons of
both degrees.
I believe there is very little knowledge in the undergrad community about post-graduation options in pakistan other than FCPS/DCPS.
I believe this is important now since training abroad is out of the question for a large number of us.

looks like no body knows about md/ms programs.
MD(medical and related) MS(surgery and related)programs are research degrees handed out by universities unlike FCPS which s a clinical diploma handed out by CPSP a private institution. Both are taken as equal by the PMDC and u are regarded consultant with either.
PROS: university degree
no part1 etc
4 years (even for subspecialities)
Cons: limited seats
public less aware
very dependent on the professor

just an addition
masters or research is academic education while specialization is professional clinical practice.
If you are interested to do knew things then MD/PhD is best but if you interested to practice and dealing with patients then best option is specialization.

acc to defination"Scientific research relies on the application of the scientific method, a harnessing of curiosity. This research provides scientific information and theories for the explanation of the nature and the properties of the world around us".
It makes practical applications possible
For doctors when we are in research field we only work on hypothesis and try to prove that hypothesis while specialist is masters of clinical cases because he is dealing a lot of patients.although medical research can be part of practice but in speciafic area.

without on going research the whole body of scientific knowledge would become stagnant and ultimately redundant!
anyways in todays scenario "publish or perish" is the motto of the day.Even the government (although a little belatedly) has recognized the importance of research and linked future progress and promotions to assistant professor and professor levels to number of papers written. lets hope this will ultimately lead to the development of treatment guidelines that cater to our local needs.

I would advise definitely go for FCPS .

The problem with MD is that it being a very institution and trainer dependent degree and has no definite pattern .

Some MD students who got admission in PIMS in 1990 got MD a decade later , some never , that is if I am not wrong .

Regarding standard , MD is as good as the trainer and the department and the student. Some MD are better than average FCPS , usually however both pakistani MD and FCPS pass lack personal glamour which is in need of addressing by trainers .

knowledge level is an individual thing and i have seen weak American board , MRCP , FCPS and MD , we have also seen competent general duty surgeons with no qualifications .

These days even MRCP part one is conducted in Pakistan for whatever worth .

Go for FCPS as it has more acceptability in career , I you already have joined MD , that is not bad either if department is good .It is the person which matters not just degrees which he or she holds .

I think in Pakistani circumstances FCPS is the best degree, it has really good weightage in term of jobs.MD degree is difficult to get and wehn it comes to jobs, evertime you would have problem and everywhere you have to explain it that it is equal ot FCPS.so better go for FCPS.Atleast it has a straight path.

DEAR DOCTOR, FCPS IS MUCH BETTER THAN MD/MS BECAUSE MD/MS IS AWARDED BY UNIVERSITY AND PAKISTANI UNIVERSITIES DONOT HAVE ACADEMIC CALENDER FOR MD/MS STUDENTS. THEY JUST FOLLOW PROFESSORS/DEAN'S WISHES AND SECONDLY MD/MS ARE NOT RECOGNIZED BY SAUDIA OR ANY OTHER COUNTRY. EVEN NOT IN AFGHANISTAN!!!!! IT IS SAID THAT IF YOU WANT TO BECOME PROFESSOR'S "CHAHITA" (DO HIS HOUSE HOLD CHORES) OR FRIEND (FOR GIRLS ONLY), OR YOU ARE AN INFLUENTIAL PERSON THEN THINK OF MD/MS. OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE TO BECOME "GADHA" FOR 10-15 YEARS BEFORE YOU GET THE DEGREE. DONOT MIND THAT FCPS IS TOUGH BUT CPSP FOLLOWS ITS SCHEDULE AND YOU KNOW WHEN THE EXAM WILL BE HELD. THIS IS NOT THE CASE WITH MD/MS PROGRAM.

Thanks a lot people for all the interest. since the new updated version of the website i haven't been able to locate my own post! Luckily today i chanced to have stumbled upon it. Well i intend to apply for both MS urology and FCPS General Surgery in june for the PIMS islamabad summer intake. Many of u might be thinking boy is he still undecided or what!
Well here is why; I happen to be a regular (permanent)employee of the "Great" Government of pakistan and am posted at PIMS with the urology department.I have been trying in vain to persuade the administration to allow me to start PG training for the intermediate module
Gen Surgery but since i dont have the correct "connections" they wont allow it just yet. I cleared my Mbbs 4 years ago and my FCPS part-1 last year and i'm not getting any younger. Getting a job is not an issue as i intend to stay on in PIMS. The other issue that u have to be your instructors slave holds true pretty much in any situation. Many of the MS/MD trainers are the same people who are CPSP trainers and examiners and we all know that is not a very big circle (not that all hold grudges). People usually complete their training on time in MS as well.
Therefore i will apply in both with FCPS as 1st priority and MS as a backup plan? P.S. i just hope everything doesn't blowup in my face:-)

Agreed that MCPS, FCPS and MD/MS are run by the same professors, the content of training, duration, exam and applicablity of these degrees are different. MCPS is a minor diploma, FCPS is a major postgraduate qualification. MD/MS are equivalent to FCPS but MD/MS are not well organized program as these depent on your professor/boss

i have also gone through the same situation.after hj i was double minded what to do fcps mcps or ms after wasting 2 years i finally took decesion to get admission in ms becoz its better than mcps its a diploma and ms md is degree equivellent to fcps you have the same opportunities as fcps dr have but in mcps u will be stopped at 19 scale.

but if someone is inservice than its a good option. bcoz god knows after how many attempt cpsp will clear our part 1 and than getting degree of fcps from cpsp is also a difficult job.

Ms/md programe nd fcps are tha same one of my fruend who is of lack of knowledge who says ms s nt recognized degree.my friend its recognized all over the wold nd n many countreries thier lisence exame are exampted fr md /ms n gulf .as fcps was of 3years nd gradually organized tats like ms also gets organized now nd nt supervioser dependent now all ate externals frm cpsp.so one day it eill lead

MD/ MS is a university degree awarded in Pakistan.
Fcps is a diploma by a private institute (cpsp-college)
Both are clinical training programme in Pakistan.
As fcps members are larger in number as compared to MD /MS . you will hear much of it. In MD/MS you can get training only in university attached hospital.while for FCPS DIPLOMA which is technically inferior,you can training in any primary health care center attached to cpsp college.
MS/ MD is stronger than fcps , as in Europe diploma has no standing technically.

M S/ MD is a university degree.

While FCPS is a diploma of a private institution [cpsp]

Both are clinical programs.

For MS /MD YOU NEED TO JOIN UNIVERSITY AFFILIATE HOSPITAL .
WHILE FOR FCPS YOU CAN EVEN GET TRAINING IN A PRIMARY CARE HOSPITAL ATTACHED TO CPSP.
