dear doctors,
salam
may ALLAH succeed u in ur efforts.
if u want to know abt how could u enroll fr this exam than simply visit ...www.amc.org.au........u will find all inf , though its bit lengthy procedure.
bt online option will work quik.
this exam hs 2 parts.
1- BOF mcqs...one day exam ...2 shifts ..each 3.30 h ...total 150 + 150= 300 question. mastry questions r marked with * and u r suppose to gt atleast 60 % correct answers of these questions. overall passing percentage fluctautes. (as per there need).....subjects tested would be..medicine, surgey, paeds, gyn obs & psych. (some basic knowlege + 3/4 starics).
2-clinical exam.......i cannt tell u much as i hvnt taken it...one of my frnd is taking it in oct,08 so i may be able to tell u latter.
centers r only in aus: (syd, melb, perth, brisbane).
in order to make effective preparations fr mcq we may need followings:
1-old amc papers .....plz visit indian students website....www.aippg.com... to down load few old papers.
2- exam specific books by amc....
.....1-annotated mcqs
.....2-anthology of meical conditions.
3-oxford hand book clinical medicine.
4-oxford hand book of clinical soecialitis.
old parers r v significat and make 4 readings atleast of oxf: so to grip it. amc mcq book though v costly but v effective too.pay special attention to dermatology and skin cancers (special focus to dermatolgy ..eg basal cell ca..sq cell ca..caratoacnthomas...etc)
good luk to both of u.

hello everyone.
i wana ask about exclusions in amc test. as some one dne usmle is excluded for amc . is same apply for mrcp?
Posted by: soleePosts: 5 :: 16-09-2008 :: | Reply to this Message
dear colleagues
in order to get exeption fr AMC exam, australian has interduced a "copmetent authority" path way and usmle is among them. but fr that u must have gt stp-1,2,3 and 2 y residency.
if u r mrcp than u can apply fr the specialist cader registration and in order to do that u would be evaluated by the respective aussi college. eg fr mrcp (uk) u would be evaluated by royal australian college of physicians.
yes same feed back i hv frm my frnd who is working fr free mentale hospital in perth .......its v respective and financially good. al paki amc candidates beware now amc exam centers r available in new delhi,mombay.banglore.....so be quik before its saturated by indians.

Dear friends, i am also interested in taking AMC.
Can we lay down some joint strategy for starting and completing studies if possible otherwise perhaps this is difficult to study all alone.
As to books some ppl suggest.
General practise by john murtazh and Kaplan notes step 2 and of course the mcq and anthology books. do you think this is alright and does it obviate the need for reading oxford series or you think oxford series is better.
Besides we have gotten anthology pirated editions available in pakistan but since this is recommended primarily for pictures and xrays, i don't think , this is good idea. Have any one bought it from AMC directly.
please enlighten ,your help will be greatly appreciated.
PS how can we get old papers. any sites.
regards

dear farhan.
its a great idea to make a joint effort and infact i created this forum fr this purpose i m planning to take exam in march 09.i invite all of u to join me fr effective preparation
1- u can purchase AMC anthology book frm amc website ....www.amc.org.au.....click on publication and u will find an order form . u can also order on line this book will cost u 176 AUD.i have purchased the book by the same way.this book is a precised form of "OBJECTIVES OF EXAMINATION" published by canadian medical council.....www.mcc.ca......u can down load it free of cost from mcc website.bt u may not finds PICS there... so better purchase it.
2-u can down load few old papers from the site of indian students....www.aippg.com....
3-yes kaplan notes are equaly good i know docs r using them succesfully....so i endorse ur proposed books but as u mentioned old papers are the back bone of its preparation. if u go fr kaplan dont miss section of general surgery in oxford its brief and effective.
all the best

well,dr jamal i took amc mcq a couple of years back.i studied from old mcqs that u can find in any prince book shop back home.u need to study david hull for peads, high yeild psychiatry, lewllyn johnes for gynae, oxford hand book for medicine, for sugery we only did mcqs but u can also study that from oxford handbook.you may get 30% from old questions.best way is to read each question and cover the relevent topic.it will be great if u have a sensible study partner.u need 4 months time for preparation excluding any travelling and visa problems.good luck.

Dear Dr Aisha - Is the exam difficult? I will try to get the old papers from Urdu Bazaar. Do they have a name or something or are they photocopied.
My aunt Noreen Bilgrami is also in Sydney from the last 7-8 yrs, her email address is noreen_bilgrami@yahoo.com. I will ask her to get in touch with you for all types of assisstance.
I guess the biggest challenge for me is to try to find the old papers of the exam.
I basically work for an offsite family Medicine Clinic of AKUH at an Oil & Gas Installation near Khairpur.
is there any utility of doing family Practice Review / Pretest Series etc.
God bless you for your help.
Keep in touch.
Eid mubaak in advance as well.
Cheers,
Jamal

@naveed
thanx for your response and guidance.
there are two ways of preparing. One is to read MCQs and then read the relevant topic in detail from recommended books. The other traditional way is to get through all books suggested and then practise mcqs and old papers if available in the end. what do you suggest and how would you like to proceed.
i have started medicine from kaplan and intend to do away with it in lets say 20-25 days,i hope. any ideas. what are you studing ?

DR FARHAN
May Allah lead to the success.most successfull stategy to clear this exam is the first one.
ie read MCQ one by one and go through ur kaplan notes in details.most of the succesfull candidates now working in aus adopted this way.
i hv picked oxf (med) and giving it first reading hopefully will finish in 2 weeks than in plann to give one reading to oxf (sp). after that i will pick mcqs (annotated mcqs) and than will adopt the WAY 1 till the end.
try to search ANNOTATED MCQ book . like anthology its been published by amc and contains 600 mcqs with comentaries. 600 mcqs means 600 topics if u command over these topics ur exams will surely results in success (inshallah).this book also contains mcqs included in previous papers.
if u havnt apply to AMC fr registration plz do it coz it will also take some time. let me give u an idea of there process:
1-PRE-LIMINARY application (can apply on line)..will cost u 50 AUD ....they will see if ur medical college name is included in w h o dictionary.
2-you will have to fill another form (previously called FORM A)...+ source verification form (it will be sent to ECFMG that will cofirm ur degree like usmle)...thats automatically sent by AMC....you will hv to attest ur passport coppy + degree+ pic.....by notary public. and send the form to amc with 250 AUD......(VOW WHT A EARNING)...
3-NOW u can send email to amc and if they have recieved ur form A and accepted it than they will send u form C1 via email...u will have to fill it and have to send it again with exam fee 1830 AUD.
4-AMC will notify u once they have recieved it and will process it. they will forward ur details to PEARSON VUE.
5-pearson view will contact u and will verify ur deatils and exam center.
........................................
.........................................
THATS IT..........NOW U R READY FOR EXAM
keep in touch and best of luk

dear dr jamal
regarding AMC preparaty material , we hv discussed it so many times in this forum.we all hv choices regarding this. AMC even has recommended HARRISON to go for medicine but we all know thats not possible.so wht we need ? a focused , short and effective material.
there would be 2 papers each having 150 questions each (previously 125 )....1/3 will be aprx (70-80) will belong to critical condition or common in australian socity , called MASTRY questions.VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT THE PASSING SCALE IS DIFFERENT IN ORDINARY QUESTIONS & MASTRY QUESTIONS.in ordinary questions parring score is (aprx) AMC scale =250....for Mastry questions it would be arround AMC scale 300 (aprx)......AND WE R SUPPOSED TO PASS IN BOTH SEPARATLY ......in ordinary questions as well as in Mastry questions.AMC scale is very confusing and difficult calculation i could nt understand that.
following 5 disciplines r testd in this ratio=
1-medicine = 35 %
2-surgery = 25 %
3-gyne & obs = 15 %
4-paeds = 15 %
5-psychiatry = 10 %
feed back from successfull candidates are that oxf (med) and oxf (spc) is sufficient to go through.now people are also using kaplan notes with equally good result. for mcqs......try to purchase annotated mcq book. give special focus to them coz it is prepared by AMC it self and reflects the conditions/ disorders prevailing in there socity .it also hv few old repeated exam ques.some old recall mcqs are available on ....www.aippg.com....plz visit it and download it.dont waste ur time while u wait fr the availability of old papers.if u find it from prince book store or any where else plz let other also know the site.hence u have relative in sydney ..i suggest ask her to get these old papers its commenly circulating there.or atleast she can send u ANNOTATED MCQS book (120 AUD..aprx)....
when u recieve mcq book or old parers than go like dr ayesha told u ie first Mcq than through book...but till than u start in traditional way.so wht i suggest u pick ur book nw and start ur preparation and simultanously start registration procedure.
best of luk

Dear Dr Naveed - mant thanks. This forum is a blessing from heaven. Actually I am under pressure from my family to go for AMC exam. It is forbiddingly expensive proposition. I am married with two kids.
Anyhow firstn step is to prepare for the exam. I am planning to appear for MRCGP as well.
I accessed the website that you have mentioned for the papers but could not find the paers. It is a huge place. Perhaps you could do us all a huge favour by emailing us some of the papers.
This forum is a pleasent surprise for me.
It is a privelege to be acquainted with a wonderful person like you.
Will keep in touch.
We are in the last few days of Ramadan, so
Eid Mubarak to all of you out there.
God bless you all.

dear naveed. its nice to hear your strategy. I wish if we could study medicine together. I have already started but kind of almost crawling or creeping. So it will be nice if you give me some company and as you said ,this is precise reason why did you start this forum.
One good way will be to start posting old medicine questions here and then we shall be discussing them besides reading relevant topic in detail. I said this since you seem to have a collection of old questions or at least have access to those sites which offer such questions. Meanwhile i'll try the same.Advantage will be that other interested ppl will have opportunity to join us and share all the related information.

its a great idea. i would post here wht so ever mcqs i could collect from web. i dont hv old parers bt i m relying upon annotated mcq book. any way a joint effort is always much effective than a solo flight.
but rite now its EID DAY here in saudi arabia
so WISH U ALLLLLLLL very HAPPY EID MUBARAK and pray ALLAH fr ur success.

yar these are loads of questions. I am just dumb how to reply each . I dont have even all the books. Are these all from that annotated mcq books? i thought we should only focus on medicine. But any ways give me some time and do some research on all these. we 'll discuss insha Allah very shortly.

AA,eid mubarek to u as well..mcqs u can easily find from prince book shop both in KE and RMC.they are so popular now a days .you can place an order at medical college book shop to provide u with all the material.another thing ,do all these recall questions on this website as well.
Posted by: dr_ayeshaPosts: 8 :: 02-10-2008 :: | Reply to this Message
dr jamal, exam is not difficult . u just have to learn their approach.this u can do only by doing as many old questions as possible.u need to stay focused on the subjects listed in amc website.also, there is a blackwell publishers mcq book . u can also find that photocopied in medical college bookshops.
Posted by: dr_ayeshaPosts: 8 :: 02-10-2008 :: | Reply to this Message
@ farhan
yes same were my feeling when i tried to go first to MCQS. infact whole academic life we been using traditional method for exam preparations.i suggest rite now u keep pursuing ur kaplan medicine and just copy these mcqs and print them out. i plann to read oxf med & sp one time than will pick mcqs one by one will go back to book again for mcqs in details + anthology...during last 40 days i would focus on annotated book + mcqs.
i have finished gastroentrology , nephrology ...now just started cardiology.
no its not from annotated book ...but just posted by an old AMC candidate....i just copied these mcqs.
thanx to dr ayesha she has given specific address for old papers hence u r in pakistan so in better position to search it.also see if u can get the photocopy of annotated mcqs, it would be wonderfull adition to ur efforts.

I will not advise for india although perhaps logistically and economically, that seems better. I think thailand, hongkong or perhaps singapore are better alternatives. Amongst this i have bangkok or thailand in mind. That's perhaps nearest ,hence cheaper and manageable. I don't know which will be better while being at your place. but i second thailand.
As to studies. this is fair approach and i didn't know you have already tried this exam. you are experienced and we can gain a lot from your brush with this exam earlier.
But i'll suggest ,in order to be in touch and lest we should not go out of tune, we should at least keep posting or responding to questions related to subject we are currently doing and of course initially at slower pace. then gradually we can pick speed. so start posting one or two questions from medicine.......... This way we can be on much more objective and targeted track right from outset. I'll wait for questions but not flowing from you rather it should be trickle.....
