Plunging ranula.
Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Nov ;2(4):280-2.
Ranulas are cysts resulting from retention or extravasation of saliva from the sublingual gland. Two varieties are described: oral ranula and a cervical or plunging ranula. Plunging ranula occurs secondary to disruption or extension of pseudocyst of sublingual salivary gland. The cyst spreads through or behind the mylohyoid muscle resulting in a cervical or plunging ranula. A plunging ranula is thus located below the mylohyoid muscle and may present a swelling in the upper part of the neck. Plunging ranulas occur less commonly than oral ranulas. 89 cases with plunging ranula have been reported in English literature since 1910. We report our experience of a case of huge plunging ranula which had an oral component.
