Development of lungs in Rats.
Pak Postgrad Med J Nov ;14(1):31-3.
Development of lungs in rats begins with the formation of bronchial buds that undergo repeated branching to establish the bronchial tree. The main stages of lungs development in rats includes pseudo glandular, precanalicular, canalicular, terminal sac and alveolar. At birth, alveoli are absent in rats. In first few days of life in rats, there is phase of dilatation of lung, followed by phase of rapid cellular and tissue proliferation. Alveolar multiplication is brought about by the subdivision of the primitive terminal units, primary pulmonary saccules, by secondary alveolar crests, and by alveolarization of non alveolated and partly alveolated airways. Alveolar multiplication may occur throughout life in rats.
