Sensitivity of Clinical Scoring System for the Diagnosis of suspected Intestinal Tuberculosis in Children under 5 years.
Pak J Gastroenterol Nov ;12(1-2):0-.

The study was conducted in the Paediatrics OPD of the Jinnah Hospital Lahore from February to November 1997 to establish the sensitivity and specificity of modified New Guinea Paediatrics Tuberculosis Score Charts for the diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis. Total 35 children under 5 years with failure to thrive and chronic gastrointestinal symptoms were evaluated with Paediatrics Tuberculosis Score Chart, out of those 19 (54.3%) scored seven or more and were labeled as tuberculous. This diagnosis was counter tested by putting these children to anti-tuberculous treatment and the response was measured in terms of improvement in symptoms and weight gain during follow-up and final assessment was made after 8 weeks. 13 (68.4%) out of 19 responded to the treatment, 2 (12.5%) out of 16 who were labeled as non tuberculosis attained the tuberculous score during the course of follow-up and also responded to treatment. The sensitivity and specificity of the clinical scoring system was 86.6% and 70.0% respectively. The Paediatrics Tuberculosis Score Charts are sensitive and specific parameter for the diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis.
