Causes & complications of ear, nose & throat injuries in children - A study of 80 cases.

Objectives: To find out the mechanism of injuries in young adults, who encounter it in ear, nose, and throat region. It is a very serious problem relating to facial disfigurement and permanent damage to certain areas of ear, nose and throat. Research Methodology: It is a descriptive cross sectional, prospective study of 80 cases, carried out for a period of 12 months at department of ENT at Khyber Teaching Hospital, Peshawar. This study included children with age range from 1-12 years. All the patients presented in Out patients department and a few of them were admitted for tertiary care. Results: This study shows that 50% of injuries in children were of nasal origin, among them the nasal bone fracture was the commonest 62.5%. The commonest cause of injuries was pointed objects in the mouth in patients less than 5 years of age, while in children between the age of 5-10 years the cause was fall from the height. In 1.25% of patients the cause of injury was Road traffic accident in the range of 10-12 years. Conclusion: The mechanism involved in injuries in children relating to ENT areas were different in adults, suggesting that mostly the injuries in children are either from pointed objects or from fall.
