An energy-dispersive x-ray analysis and sem observation of surface debris on unused k3 files.
J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;15(3):134-8.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to conduct an energy dispersive X-ray analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation of debris on surfaces of unused NiTi k3 files METHODS: One hundred twenty new K3 NiTi rotary instruments with a 0.04 and 0.06 taper, sizes #15, #20, #25, #30, #35, #40, were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at a magnification of 50x for surface debris and metallic spurs. An X-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) was performed to analyze the nature and composition of these debris and metallic spurs. RESULTS/CONCLUSION: Showed that none of the studied instruments were free from debris and metallic spurs as delivered form the manufacturer. EDX analysis showed variable amounts on the tip and along the 16-mm in all file, these materials on the new K3 files showed it contained Oxygen (0) Magnesium (Mg), Silicone (Si), Titanium (Ti), Ferrous (Fe), Sulphur (S), Nickel (Ni), Chlorine(Cl), Potassium(K), Calcium(Ca). Quality control of endodontic equipment, materials and instruments is necessary to ensure that they are manufactured according to specifications
