Histopathological evaluation of esophageal columnarized mucosa in Gastroesophageal Reflux disease patients.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;20(1):11-3.

This study was done to determine histopathological diagnosis of endoscopically visualized lower esophageal columnarized mucosa in gastroesophageal reflux disease [GERD] patients. This cross sectional observational study was carried out at Medical Department of Rawalpindi General Hospital and Holy Family Hospital, Rawalpindi, from July 2004 to February 2005. Fifty GERD patients, who had columnarization of lower esophageal segment, were included consecutively. All patients were subjected to four quadrant biopsy of columnarized mucosa. Biopsy specimens were histopathologically evaluated. 29 [58%] patients were male and 21 [42%] female. Mean patient age was 43.02 ± 11.98 years. Histopathological examination showed that esophagitis was predominant lesion seen in 32 [64%] patients. Barrett`s esophagus was noted in 3 [6%] patients, while 15 [30%] patients had normal histology. Our results indicate that esophagitis is most and Barrett`s esophagus least frequent histopathological diagnosis in GERD patients with lower esophageal columnarized mucosa.
