To evaluate the prognostic significance of non-hepatic laboratory investigations in cirrhotic patients is there need of a new grading classification.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;20(1):25-31.

The study was due to evaluate the prognostic significance of non-hepatic laboratory investigations like leukocyte count, glucose level, sodium and potassium level, creatinine and arterial blood gases in hospitalized cirrhotic patients. 150 patients (M-80, F=70) with liver cirrhosis were evaluated. Their average age was 54.36 ± 4.22 years. 32 patients were in Child`s Class A, 36 in B, while 82 were in C. 67 patients died during hospitalization while 83 improved. Patients who died during hospitalization had higher leukocyte count, serum potassium level and serum creatinine level. They also had lower serum sodium level, arterial pH level, symptomatic hypoglycemia and low urine sodium as compared to those who survived after hospitalization. In addition to Child`s scoring to determine the mortality in cirrhotics, non-hepatic hematological biochemical and acid base disturbances can also be used as a parameter of prognosis in hospitalized cirrhotic patients.
