Split thickness skin grafting for wounds in a general surgical setting: our experience.

A prospective observational study was carried out in Surgical Unit I, Dow University of Health Sciences, and Civil Hospital Karachi, from 1st February 2006 to December 2006, to evaluate the results of split thickness skin grafts in a general surgical unit. A total of 100 patients, 78 males and 22 females were studied. Most of the patients were between the ages of 20 to 45 years of age. Degloving injuries and necrotizing infections were the commonest cause of extensive wounds (64%), followed by various causes like fungating skin and breast tumors. In 8 patients there was graft failure due to post-graft infection. Leg ulcer patients group (3%) were the most resistant. There was no mortality and the commonest complication was wound infection in 17 patients , Staphylococcus Aureus being the main culprit. The mean hospital stay was 18.3 days.
