Head dressings for middle ear surgery: are they advantageous?.

OBJECTIVES: To ascertain the value of head dressings in post-operative management of patients under going middle ear and mastoid surgery. DESIGN: Prospective study. PLACE & DURATION OF STUDY: The study was conducted at the departments of ENT Peoples Medical College Nawabshah over the period of one year (September 2005 -September 2006). SUBJECT & METHODS: One hundred patients were included in study who underwent middle ear or mastoid surgery and were divided into two groups, head dressing and non-head dressing groups after the wound closure. RESULTS: Eleven patients in head dressing group developed wound complications as opposed to five patients in non-head dressing group. CONCLUSION: The application of pressure dressings following middle ear and mastoid surgery is unnecessary and may contribute to increased wound morbidity.
