Study of electrophysiological parameters in healthy subjects and patients of Motor-mononeuropathy.
Med Channel Jan ;13(1):59-63.

OBJECTIVE: To study the pattern of electrophysiological variables in motormononeuropathies. SETTING: This study was carried out in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Subjects were patients of motor-mono-neuropathy (n=43) and normal healthy persons (n= 18) were examined during the course of present study. The action potential in normal subjects and patients with purely motor neuropathy were recorded by electromyography (EMG). Motor nerve conduction velocity with other variables such as PL, DL, CT and MAP recorded in median, ulna,; posterior tibial and common peroneal nerves by giving supra-maximal stimulus of 200-250 volts for duration of 0.2 m sec (six times higher than motor threshold). RESULT: In motor-mononeuropathy of median, ulnar, posterior tibial and common peroneal nerves, the PL, DL, CT were significantly increased where as NCV and MAP significantly reduced in all cases. CONCLUSION: Electrophyiological examination using EMG/NCS is helpful for early detection of abnormal functions of nerve which direct a physician towards the appropriate disorders. This study also indicate that the pressure syndrome of prolong duration causes demyelination or axonal loss.
