Frequency and complications of Cholesteatoma in patients with chronic suppurative Otitis Media.

Chronic suppurative otitis media, associated with cholesteatoma remains disappointing. The prevalence of cholesteatoma and its complications were significantly high, a couple of decades ago. The world has been observing the decline in condition, for last few years. Current series is relative of that change. This study comprises of 200 cases of chronic discharging ears, attending out patient department of ENT, Head & Neck Surgery, Civil Hospital, Karachi. Majority of cases were belonging to poor families (65%) and urban population (64%). Males were 47% and females were 53%. The Pattern of tympanic membrane perforation was central (92%) and marginal (8%). Initially all the patients were treated conservatively, but those having persistent disease (20%) underwent mastoid exploration. Cholesteatoma was found in 16 cases with marginal perforation except two cases, having central perforation. The commonest complication observed was ossicular damage.
