J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;16(1):25-9.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the occlusal relationships between the primary canine and the primary second molar, and the degree of overbite and overjet in relation to age and gender among a group of three to six year-old Saudi preschool children. SUBJECTS AND METHOD: A total of 500 randomly selected Saudi preschool children, 250 boys and 250 girls aged 3-6 year-old (mean age of 61 ± 4.72 months) were examined. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were carried out to analyze the data. RESULTS: The result revealed that the most common second primary molars relationship was flush terminal plane (86.5 %) followed by the mesial step (7.8 %) and the distal step (5.7 %). Class I primary canine relationship was the most common relationship (87 %) followed by class III (8%) and class II (5%). Normal overbite was shown in more than half the sample. Anterior open-bite was reported in 8.3 % of the sample, which was greater in girls than boys from age three to six years. The most common overjet was 1 mm to 2 mm among all age groups and showed significant increase with age. CONCLUSION: Hence the results of the present study are considered to be of great importance to the clinician in making treatment decisions for preschool children.
