Frequency of Hepatitis B surface antigen and Anti-Hepatitis C antibodies in apparently healthy blood donors in Northern areas.

Objective: To determine the frequency of HBsAg and anti HCV among the potential blood donors belonging to Northern areas. Design of study: A retrospective descriptive study. Time and place of study: This study period was from January 2003 to December 2005 at District Head Quarter Hospital Skardu, Combined Military Hospital Skardu, District Head Quarter Hospital, Gilgit, Combined Military Hospital, Gilgit and Civil Hospital Tolti. Subjects and methods: A total of 8949 apparently healthy blood donors, belonging to Northern areas were screened for HBsAg and anti-HCV by rapid method. Results: Overall sero-positivity of HBsAg was 3.66% and anti-HCV 1.35%. Conclusion: The result indicates that frequency of HBsAg is more than anti-HCV in Northern areas.
