Etiology of acute renal failure in a teaching hospital of Karachi.

INTRODUCTION: Acute renal failure can be a presenting problem as well as a frequent complication in already hospitalized patients. It is a potentially reversible condition with etiology dependant management plan and outcome. The study was done to find out frequency of various etiologies of ARF in developing country like Pakistan along with difference in etiological frequency of ARF from developed countries. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: 100 adult patient of ARF admitted in Ziauddin hospital were study subjects. The etiological factors of ARF were determined by history, physical examination and investigations. RESULTS: Mean age was 48 years (Range 18-80 years), 64% were men. Etiology of ARF: Divided into three main categories (Medical 75%, surgical 17%, obstetric 5% and Others 3%). Gastroenteritis (32% of all Medical causes) is the most common etiological factor causing ARF in this study.
