Cigarette smokers and their respiratory health in Lahore district.

Cigarette smoking is flourishing though it is a well-known health hazard. Objectives: The aim of this study was to provide calculated and measured values of damage incurred by smoking on the respiratory health. Setting: General public from Lahore city. Materials and Methods: A total of 509 persons from different areas of Lahore were studied. After calculating their number of pack years of smoking, the peak expiratory flow rate of these subjects was recorded by mini Wright`s peak flow meter. Results: The peak expiratory flow rate of smokers with less than 10 pack years was 417 liters per minute. Peak expiratory flow rate of smokers with 10 to 20 pack years was 366 liters per minute. Peak expiratory flow rate of smokers with more than 20 pack years was 310 liters per minute. Conclusion: Smoking adversely affects the expiratory flow rate and the respiratory capacity.
