Frequency of various Psychiatric disorders managed in indoor setting of a Teaching Hospital.

Objectives: The present study aims to describe the frequency of various psychiatric illnesses among psychiatric patient with demographic details in a period of one year. Design: Descriptive study Place and Duration of study: The data was collected from In-door Department of Psychiatry, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Lahore from April 2006 to April 2007 .A self-developed Performa was used for measuring demographic variables. Patients and Methods: Over a period of one year 266 patients were admitted in In-door Psychiatry department, Sir Ganga Ram hospital, Lahore. Data was collected for the following variables: age, sex, duration of admission reason for admission, socio-economic status of the patients and diagnosis according to DSM – IV. Results: The study concluded that Depression as the most common disorder was found among 18.5%. Bipolar disorder among 16.9% and Drug Addiction was found among 15.2% of our In-door patients. Schizophrenia as the major psychiatric disorder was found among 11.5%. This means that Psychiatric disorders are more common in population with low socioeconomic status in rural areas and dominantly involve the males.
