Interpretation of arterial blood gases part II, normal anion gap or hyperchloremic acidosis.
Pak J Chest Med Jan ;13(2):15-7.

The hallmark of this disorder is that the low bicarbonate of metabolic acidosis is associated with hyperchloremia, so that the anion gap remains normal. In these conditions, plasma bicarbonate decreases and is replaced by chloride to maintain electroneutrality. Consequently these disorders are sometimes referred to collectively as hyperchloremic acidosis. This is a review article.
