Frequency of weak D type in the blood donor population at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad.
Ann Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;2(3):200-2.

Objective: To determine the frequency of Weak D among the donor population of PIMS, Islamabad, and recommend a `Weak D Transfusion Policy` suitable for a blood transfusion setup in a developing country. Place and Duration of Study: This hospital-based, descriptive study was conducted in Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, Islamabad, during the month of May 2005. Subjects and Methods: Clotted blood from the donors was collected and tested for ABO and Rhesus group by a uniform method. Rh-Negative blood samples were identified and separated and Weak D test was performed on them. Results: Only one case of Rh-Negative was detected as that of Weak D antigen. The over all incidence of Weak D detected was thus 0.0006% and 0.7 % among Rh-Negative individuals. Conclusion: The incidence of Weak D detected was much lower than that reported in the western studies, which may in part be due to bias in the donor category of the present study. A `Weak D Transfusion Policy` is also recommended on the basis of the findings of the present study and the review of the latest literature.
