J Fatima Jinnah Med Coll Lahore Jan ;1(3-4):59-63.

Objectives: To study the effect of life style on prevalence, severity and progress of obesity, atherosclerosis and diabetes. Study Design: Observational study. Place and duration: The study was carried out at British Petroleum Exploration & Production, Badin Pakistan from March 2004 to September 2005. Subjects and Methods: The study was carried out at British Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Badin Pakistan. A total of 450 persons were included in the study. They belonged to three main categories e.g. officers, mechanics and labourers. Each subject was examined at quarterly basis, complete physical examination and relevant investigations were carried out on each visit. Results: Out of 450 personnel of all the categories obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemias and diabetes were found to be prevalent in officers who were vigorous smokers and had a sedentary life style. The second community at risk was that of mechanics. The labourers did not have a safe level of HDL which could be due to lack of fruit intake by them. Conclusion: The study concludes that more food with less physical activity predisposes to hypertension, diabetes, obesity, dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis. Life style modification is necessary to reduce these hazards.
