Western medicine is much interested in the issue of consent. Consent, infact, is based on a power balance between two persons - physician and patient. It is a process of inviting a humanitarian dialogue. The Principle of Nonmaleficience or `do no harm,` is one of the strongest moral principles, has been attributed to the Hippocratic Oath (4th century BC) and obtaining consent is a part of a responsibility of nonmaleficience. The moral basis of consent is founded on the Principle of Autonomy - autonomous person determines his course of action in accordance with a plan chosen by himself. This is a review article.
