To study the level of IgE in asthma before and after medication: an Electrophoretic approach.
J Fatima Jinnah Med Coll Lahore Jan ;1(3-4):87-8.

Background: Bronchial asthma has a wide clinical spectrum ranging from a mild, intermittent disease to one that is severe, persistent and difficult to treat, which in some instances can also be fatal Study Design: Present study tried to find out the level of IgE before and after medication by using a technique of electrophoresis. Material and Methods: 10 asymptomatic controls and 20 cases of asthmatic adults were studied on the basis of respiratory symptoms including coughing, wheezing, shortening of breath, chest tightness etc. The subjects were taken from medical ward of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. The time duration of asthma was form 3-5 years. Results showed an increased mean protein level in patients as compared to normal control subjects. 14 major fractions ranging in molecular weights from 200kD to 10 kD appeared in patient samples subjected to SDS – PAGE The required bands of immunoglobulin E were of 75 kD and 25 kD. Electrophoretic profile showed that there is a decreased level of IgE with after medication. Conclusion: It is suggested that electrophoresis is an early and cheap method of estimating the level of IgE.
