Hypertension and obesity.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate association of hypertension with obesity central obesity in low socioeconomic population. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive study PLACE OF STUDY: Dow University of Health Sciences, Lyari General Hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective study carried out in Lyari General Hospital of 100 hypertensive patients, 50 were males and 50 were females. All were aged between 20 to 60 years, were interviewed in detail & analyzed with BMI, waist hip ratio & waist circumference to assess the obesity. A proper general physical examination was carried out & tabulated. The causes of secondary hypertension were excluded on the basis of history and clinical examination. RESULTS: According to this study, with Waist Hip Ratio (WHR) 55, Waist Circumference (WC) 64 & Body Mass Index (BMI) 46 were found to be overweighted obese. Among these with WHR, 55 / 25 were diabetic while 55 / 30 non-diabetics. According to waist measurement 64 / 31 were diabetic & 64 / 33 turned out to be non-diabetic. Similarly, looking at BMI 46 / 24 came out as diabetics while 46 / 22 found to be non-diabetics. In non- obese population, according to WHR 45 / 21 were diabetics & 45/ 24 non-diabetics. With respect to WC 36 / 14 were diabetics & 36 / 22 non-diabetics. While with BMI 54 / 23 diabetics, 54 / 31 found to be non-diabetics. CONCLUSION: Hypertension is strongly associated with obesity central obesity in low socioeconomic population.
