Positive rate of anti TGA antibody in suspected cases of Coeliac disease.

OBJECTIVE: Detection of coeliac disease to decrease the burden of unnecessary medications and parent counseling regarding natural course of disease. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. PLACE & DURATION OF STUDY: Department of pediatrics, NMCH Nawabshah from January 2005 to December 2006. MATERIAL & METHODS: 100 children irrespective of sex and race, ranging from I year to 13 years, admitted as coeliac disease on the basis of history, physical examination, investigations as well as clinical response to gluten free diet were included in this study. Anti tissue transglutaminase IgA antibody was carried out in all patients. Data was analyzed by using SPSS version 10. RESULTS: Male female ratio was found to be 1.2:1. Age ranges from lyear to 13 years. Commonest age group was found to be 2-7 years, 76 (76%). Mean age was found to be 5.5 years. Common clinical presentation was found to be chronic diarrhea 80 (80%), failure to thrive 67 (67%), anemia 64 (64%), short stature in 60 (60%) and distention of abdomen 50 (50%). In 85 patients Anti TGA antibody was found be abnormal while in 15 patients it was found to be at upper level of normal. CONCLUSION: As this illness has different mode of presentations so can be suspected `in any child. Suspected children should be investigated properly in order to reduce the burden of unnecessary medication and proper counseling of parents in relation to progress of disease.
