Med Channel Jan ;13(4):31-3.

OBJECTIVE: To determine neutrophils phagocytic Index and Nitroblue Tetrazolium Reduction in Diabetic patients. DESIGN: An experimental study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: The study was carried out in pathology Department of Nawabshah Medical College, Nawabshah. The period of study was one year from January 2006 to December 2006. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In this study 35 healthy subjects as a control and 105 diabetic patients were selected. The neutrophils phagocytosis was assessed by percent phagocytosis (%P) and Phagocytic Index (PI). The bactericidal activity of neutrophils was evaluated by Nitroblue Tetrazolium (NBT) Reduction test. RESULTS: The percent phagocytosis, phagocytic Index and NBT reduction were significantly decreased in diabetic patients as compared to healthy control subjects (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: This study has revealed that the neutrophils phagocytic and bacterial killing activities in diabetes Mellitus impaired which make the diabetic patients to develops various infections.
