Types of headaches in patients reporting to a neurology centre in Karachi (a descriptive study).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of headache type in a Pakistani population. DESIGN: Descriptive Study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY: Neuro Diagnostic Centre, Hamdard University Hospital (Taj Medical Complex), Karachi, from July 2005 to January 2006. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 70 headaches patients were included in this study who reported to the Private Neurology Centre and complained of headaches between July 2005 to January 2006. Age ranged from 8 to 55 years. RESULTS: 27 (38.57%) patients were diagnosed as migraine, 14 (20%) mixed headaches, 14 (20%) tension headaches, 08 (11.43%) drug induced headaches, 02 (2.86%) idiopathic intracranial hypertension, 02 (2.86%) cervicogenic headaches, 01 (1.43%) cluster headache, 01 (1.43%) organic headache and 01 (1.43%) had post- traumatic headache. Diagnosis was based on IHS criteria. CONCLUSION: Though this is a small study but certain aspects of this study were unusual. Migraine was the dominating headache while tension & mixed headaches followed migraine.
