Liver abscess and liver fuction test.

OBJECTIVE : To evaluate liver function test in liver abscess. STUDY DESIGN : Descriptive Study PLACE OF STUDY : Dow University of Health Sciences, Lyari General Hospital January 2006- March 2007 and Liaquat University of Health Sciences Hyderabad. MATERIAL & METHODS : This study was conducted in Lyari General Hospital Dow University of Health Sciences and Liaquat University of Health Sciences Hyderabad of 30 patients including 25 males and 5 females, aged b/w 20-65 years. Patients with end stage renal failure, advanced cardiac failure, diagnosed chronic liver disease, previous history of jaundice or liver abscess, malignancies and active alcoholism were excluded. Patients presented with right hypochondrial pain, fever with or without rigor were taken to screen for liver abscess with ultrasound, LFTs, CBC-MP, UCE, PT & APTT and results were tabulated. Detailed history was taken, all patients were properly examined and printed performa was filled in. RESULTS : This study of 30 patients showed abnormal liver function tests in 25 (83.33%) patients including 22 (88%) males and 3 (12%) females in diagnosed patients of liver abscess with ultrasonic liver examination. 11 / 25 (44%) patients have their raised bilirubin, SGPT and alkaline phosphatase. 3 / 25 (12%) patients have only raised SGPT while 5 / 25 (20%) patients also have raised alkaline phosphatase only. In 6 / 25 (24%) patients have raised SGPT and alkaline phosphatase. CONCLUSION : This study showed 25 / 30 patients have their abnormal LFTs. So, this suggests liver abscess could cause abnormal Liver Function Test at the time of presentation.
