Effects of propranolol on testosterone in adult rats.
Int J Pathol Jan ;5(2):54-7.

Background: Propranolol, a non-specific ß-adrenergic receptor blocker has been proposed as an effective agent in the management of cardiac disease more specifically in males. Its effects and side effects on male reproductive system are under investigation. Aims of the study: To observe the effects of propranolol on serum level of testosterone in adult rat Materials and methods: Fifty six adult male rats divided into four groups control and treated were used in the study. 0.5ml injection of distilled water to control and 0.5 ml injection of distilled water containing propranolol 1mg, 2mg and 4mg kg-1 body weight daily intraperitoneally for sixty days was given to treated rats. Serum testosterone and LH hormones were assayed after treatment and recovery period each of sixty days. The results were analyzed by one way ANOVA and LSD post-hoc test. Results: The change in body weight was similar in control, treated and recovered rats. Testosterone hormone assay showed significantly lower serum testosterone level (p < 0.05) in 4mg treated rats when compared with controls. Serum Luteinizing hormone assay showed significantly lower serum Luteinizing hormone level (p < 0.05) in 4mg treated rats when compared with control and 1mg treated rats. Serum level of both hormones was reversible after a recovery period of sixty days. Conclusion: Low level of serum testosterone in propranolol treated adult rat was observed.
