Perineal canal: a rare anorectal malformation (ARM).

Objective: The primary objective is to describe a rare form of anorectal malformation in female patients which is not described in standard reference books. A simplified surgical technique is highlighted. Design: Descriptive study Place and duration of study: The data was collected from the in-patient Department of Paediatric Surgery, Mayo Hospital, Lahore over a period of 14 years (1993-2007). Patient’s and methods: All the female patients with ARM were screened and 12 cases of perineal canal were isolated. Minimum age of presentation was one month and maximum limit was 15 years with an average of 18 months. Five (41.67%) patients had recurrent bouts of UTI and four (33.33%) showed variable degree of vaginitis. After gut preparation all the patients underwent excision of the tract through a core incision within the fold of posterior fourchette. Results and complications: Two (16.67%) cases developed superficial wound infection. One (8.43%) patient each had secondary haemorrhage and recurrence of fistula requiring revision surgery. Rest of the cases had a cosmetically pleasing outcome with no functional deficit.
