Deranged coagulation profile among obstetric patients.

Objective: To determine the pattern of deranged coagulation profile among obstetric patients. Design & Duration: Descriptive case series over a six months study period. Setting: Department of Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Unit III, Civil Hospital, Karachi. Patients: All obstetric patients admitted with deranged coagulation profile. Methodology: The details of all the patients were filled on a proforma and analyzed. Results: A total of 1151 obstetric patients were seen during the study period. Amongst these 50(4.3%) had deranged coagulation profile. Majority of these patients were non-booked and referred. Their mean age was 29.7 years and the gestational age 33.9 weeks. Eclampsia was found in 48% cases, placental abruption in 20%, placenta previa in 18%, pre-eclampsia in 8% and pregnancy induced hypertension in 2% of the cases. In all patients anemia was present, and the PT and APTT was high. The platelet count was low in 66% cases, while the FDP was high in 84% cases. Conclusion: The frequency of deranged profile among obstetric patients was 4.3%. Most of the patients were referred and non-booked.
