Ethnic and geographical distribution of HBsAg and anti-HCV in recruits belonging to Mianwali district.

Background: The prevalence of hepatitis B and C infection is high in Pakistan and nation wide efforts are required to identify people who may have been infected with HBV and HCV. This study estimated the frequency of HBsAg and anti-HCV seropositivity among young healthy recruits belonging to Mianwali district. Design: Cross sectional observational study. Place and duration of study: Pathology Department of CMH Sargodha from January 2007 to February 2008. Subjects and methods: A total of 697 young healthy adults belonging to district Mianwali were included in the study. HBsAg and anti-HCV screening was done by rapid test kits (Chromatographic Immunoassay) and positive cases were confirmed by ELISA method from AFIP Rawalpindi. Results: The overall frequency of HBsAg and anti-HCV in our study was 1.15 % and 1.86 % respectively, Conclusion: This study indicates that there is lower frequency of HBsAg and anti-HCV among young healthy adults belonging to Mianwali district as compared to other areas of Pakistan.
