Oral intake of vitamins cocktail ameliorates Hyperhomocysteinemia in chronic renal failure/ESRD patients.
Pak J Pathol Jan ;19(1):16-9.

Objective: To estimate the homocysteine levels of chronic renal failure patients and normal subjects before and after experimentation. Material and methods: Sixty human subjects fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were inducted in the study and they were divided into two groups; control group, comprising of normal healthy individuals and study group, comprising of chronic renal failure patients. Each group had 30 subjects. Only study group received therapy of vitamin pyridoxine (B6), cyanocobalamin (B12) and folic acid in 250mg/day, 0.5mg/day and 5.0mg/day doses respectively. Results: There was significant difference in between the plasma homocysteine values of both groups when were compared before experimentation (p < 0.05). But when both group`s plasma homocysteine values were compared after experimentation, no significant difference was noticed (p > 0.05). A significant difference was also noticed in the values of plasma homocysteine of the study group before and after experimentation (p value 0.006). Conclusion: In chronic renal f ailure/ESRD patients, the oral intake of vitamin pyridoxine (B6), cyanocobalamin (B12) and folic acid cocktail ameliorates the hyperhomocysteinemia; a risk factor for coronary heart disease in such patients.
