Maternal anaemia and neonatal birth weght.

Introduction: Anaemia is the major contributory factor in causing maternal and fetal morbidity and long term health effects. Maternal nutritional status has long term effects on neonates both in early life and also in later ages. Objective: To study the effects of maternal anaemia on neonatal birth weight. Materials and methods: A comparative cross sectional study was carried out from Jan 2006 to Jan 2008 at Military Hospital Rawalpindi. All patients with age group 20-35 years and parity one or more were included in study. Patients delivering vaginaly by Caesarean section were divided into two groups. Group-I included mothers with Hemoglobin 9 gm/dl or less. Group-II includec mothers with Hemoglobin 11 gm/dl or more. Patients with Hemoglobin between 9.1gm/dl and 11.1gm/dI were excluded from the study. Neonatal birth weight was recorded and the average birth weight in the two groups was calculated and compared. Conclusion: The average birth weight in the two groups was found to be between 2.0-3.5 Kgs. No significant difference was founc in the neonatal birth weight in the two groups.
