Med Channel Jan ;5(4):31-5.

This study was an open non-comparative study of oral fluconazole 50mg once a day for two to four weeks. The rationale of this treatment was determined by the period of response by the patients to therapy. Sixty-eight patients were enrolled in the study, out of which 47 were considered evaluable for toleration and 45 for efficacy. At the end of the study, the overall clinical efficacy showed that 38 out of the 45 patients evaluated (84.5%) were cured, 4 (8.9%) showed improvement, 2 patients (4.4%) had relapses and 1 (2.2%) was marked as failure. By the same token, at the end of the study the mycological eradication was seen in 39 (86.7%) out of 45 patients, 5 (11.1 %) had persistence of the organism, and I patient (2.2%) showed eradication with re-infection. Five (10.6%) out of 47 patients suffered from adverse events. Out of these, two patients discontinued their treatment due to these adverse events. However, in tile opinion of the investigator, the adverse events of both the patients who withdrew from the study, were not due to fluconazole, but due to existing problems already present in the patients. The results of the study indicated that oral fluconazole 50mg daily for two to four weeks was effective and well tolerated by the patients. It also showed that this therapy is an attractive alternative to topical therapy.
