J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(8):278-80.

To document metabolic syndrome X (MSX) in diabetes and its effect on coronary artery disease (CAD), 3275 diabetic patients, 37.5% being male and 62.5% female were registered and studied at Diabetic Clinic of Jinnah Hospital, Lahore during January, 1996 to December, 1997. Obesity was seen in 72.6%, hypertension in 42.8% and dyslipidemia in 68.5%. The MSX was observed in 20.7% of total patients, 21.3% being males and 20.3% females (p>0.05) respectively. CAD was seen in 17%, its occurrence in patients with and without MSX was 79.8% versus 11% in male and 83.9% versus 8.2% in female patients respectively (p<0.0001), while incidence of CAD in different subgroups of MSX-NIL patients ranged from 1.7% to 35%(p<0.001), so it was concluded that diabetes mellitus, obesity and dyslipidemia are more common in female patients. Presence of MSX increases the risk of CAD by 7.3 times in male and 10.2 times in female patients.
