Etiological Pattern of Septicemia at three Hospitals in Lahore.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;10(10):375-9.

Septicemia is a life-threatening clinical emergency. Present study was conducted to determine the etiological pattern of organisms causing septicemia at 3 different hospitals of Lahore. Blood samples of 364 patients, 222 males and 142 females were cultured for isolation of organisms. Aerobic blood cultures were positive for growth in 59% samples with no significant difference between male and female patients. Only one thioglycollate broth tube was positive for anaerobic bacteria. Majority of the cultures (98.6%) yielded single type of organism, 102 strains of Gram-positive and 116 Gram-negative organisms were isolated. Staph aureus and coagulase negative staphylococci (CONS) were predominant among Gram-positive isolates while Pseudomonas species, Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella pneumoniae predominated Gram-negative isolates. Fluoroquinolone drugs (ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin) were the most effective antibiotics against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
