Organisms responsible for acute septic arthritis at different age groups.

Objective: To study the frequency of different organisms responsible for Acute Septic Arthritis at different age groups. Study design: A descriptive study. Place and duration of study: The study was conducted at the department of Orthopaedic unit II and the department of Pediatrics, Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital Karachi, from Janauary to December 2006. Patients and Methods: A total of 100 patients with Septic Arthritis were collected during one-year period and were evaluated for different organisms responsible for Acute Septic Arthritis in different age groups. Results: On culture of synovial fluid, staphylococcus aureus was the commonest organism that was obtained in seventy patients (70%). It was followed by the streptococcus which was found in twenty seven patients (27%). Pneumococcus was isolated in two cases (2%), while E.colli was found in one case (1%). (Table No. 4). In our study, the highest incidence of septic arthritis was found in children up to 10 years of age. Conclusion: Staphylococcus aureus appears to be the commonest organism isolated from the synovial fluid of Septic Arthritis patients.
