Nephrotoxicity of gentamycin and its combination with cefotaxime in a group of rabbits.
J Allama Iqbal Med Coll Jan ;5(1):13-7.

Study is designed to compare the nephrotoxic effect of gentamycin alone and in combination with cefotaxime on rabbit renal function. Twenty four male rabbits were taken in the study. Rabbits were divided into three groups. To 1st group, saline, to 2nd group, gentamycin and to 3rd group gentamycin in combination with cefotaxime was given. Blood sample was drawn on 10th, 16th and 22nd day of infusion of drug and determined the level of serum creatinine and serum sodium. Increased serum creatinine level was observed on all days (i.e. of 10th, 16th and 22nd day) but maximum rise was seen on 16th day of blood collection. No marked change in serum sodium level was observed. Nephrotoxicity was confirmed by histological study of cortex of kidney. It was observed that renal dysfunction was more in case of combined drug therapy as compared with gentamycin alone. It is therefore concluded that monitoring of serum drug levels is needed to avoid the renal toxicity.
