Isolated Sternal Fractures: Do these patients require admission?.
J Surg Jan ;23-24:18-20.

A retrospective study of three years from 1997 to 1999 was undertaken to review those patients who were having isolated sternal fractures and whether any significant myocardial injury was present in these patients. 25 such patients were identified by Hospital medical records. None of these patients showed any evidence of significant myocardial injury. All investigations including 12 lead ECG, CPK-MB isoenzyme were in normal limits. No patient required any treatment for arrhythmia. These results show that sternal fractures are not a marker for clinically significant myocardial injury. We recommend that isolated sternal fractures with normal 12 lead ECG and CPK-MB isoenzyme should not be admitted in hospital and they should be discharged from A&E with an advice to followup.
